The writer analyses with mathematical simplicity, Carre's psychography. While embittered by the social system that he is part of, and disappointed by the contradictious espionage atmosphere and the Secret Services, which he had once served, he feels a strong identification with the protagonists "knights" of his books, whom he brings, by the means of existential questioning and a smothering plot, against their personal demons, as they try, through a tragic loneliness, to discover their personal identity and their catharsis in an escapism which, in turn, transforms their effort into a "tragic catharsis", for these "knights", after having shared their philosophical and existential charge with their creator writer, are, more often than not, destroyed.
