Polygnotus the Thasian (5th century B.C.) was one of the greatest painters of antiquity. Amongst his paintings stands out "Nekyia" which, once, used to decorate the interior of the "Room of the Cnides" in Delphi.
In the particular painting Polygnotus managed to present a work full of symbolisms relating to religion, politics and historical facts as well as to project specific cities like the powerful Athens or his homeland Thasos.
Based, thus, on Pausanias' description of this destroyed composition, a new representation and hermeneutic approach of Nekyia is attempted in this book, whilst Polygnotus' offer to art is also examined.
